Arvid Carlsson (25 January 1923 – 29 June 2018) was a Swedish neuropharmacologist.He was best known for his work with the neurotransmitter dopamine and its effects on Parkinson's disease.. He won the Wolf Prize in Medicine in 1979.. For his work on dopamine, Carlsson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2000. He won the award alongside Eric Kandel and Paul Greengard.

In the 1960s he pioneered the Dopamine Hypothesis as an explanation of schizophrenia. It is therefore quite significant that he should propose a different neurotransmitter as a possible explanation in this paper; the same year, Carlsson received th e Nobel Prize in Medicine. This hypothesis was formed upon the discovery of dopamine as a neurotransmitter in the brain by Arvid Carlsson (6 – 12). Dopamine receptor blockade by chlorpromazine and haloperidol, proposed in 1963 by Arvid Carlsson and Margit Lindqvist, was a cornerstone in psychiatry (13). More than 50 years ago, the Swedish scientist Arvid Carlsson undertook basic research on the neurotransmitter dopamine that was not only rapidly converted into clinical investigation but also Dr. Arvid Carlsson, a Swedish scientist whose discoveries about the brain led to the development of drugs for Parkinson’s disease and earned him a Nobel Prize, died on Friday. He was 95.

Arvid Carlsson was born in Uppsala, Sweden, to parents who were both academics. He grew up in Lund, where his father had become a professor of history. Arvid studied medicine and pharmacology at Lund University, where he later conducted his Nobel Prize-awarded research. He became a professor of pharmacology at the University of Gothenburg in 1959.
